[Muku]
In traditional Yosegi marquetry, “Muku” refers to solid patterned wood made by combining various natural hardwoods to create intricate geometric designs. These designs are formed as a single block of material and used exactly as they are, preserving the depth, texture, and craftsmanship of the original pattern.

[Zuku]
In contrast, “Zuku” is created by shaving the surface of a Muku block into extremely thin sheets—almost like paper—using a plane. These thin slices are then applied onto another surface as a decorative veneer. While Zuku captures the visual appearance of the Yosegi pattern, it does not retain the full thickness or structure of solid Muku material.
